Nintendo help you Train your Face

From the company that brought you a game that helped you train your brain, another training game is being released in Japan, this time to train your face, and is suitably titled Face Training.

The cool thing is, you get a camera bundled with the game, so you can actually see how ugly your mug is and with the use of your handy DS, you can become as beautiful as the lady in the picture. You also get a stand for the DS, with a slot to rest your stylus while you put your make-up on.

DS Mind game pulled

Ubisoft's Brain Training clone, Mind Quiz, has been pulled from the shelves of stores nationwide, as it contains a naughty word that may offend some people. Yes lets see if you notice the word in the image below.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies for Wii & DS

Geometry Wars, undoubtedly the best game on Live Arcade, is to be released on both the Nintendo Wii and DS, as Geometry Wars: Galaxies. The game is said to feature an extensive single-player game, with the Wii version making use of the Wiimote, and the DS of the touch-screen. The game will also include both versions featured in Retro Evolved.

Should be interesting to see how this is going to be, and if it will make a retail release on the Wii or a Virtual Console release.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground

Another year, and another Tony Hawk's release. This time suitably titled Proving Ground, as the game is based on making your own skating legacy through the different choices you make. Players define their story, character and style by the decision they make in the game and by the way they skate, from Philadelphia to Baltimore and Washington DC.

Whats more interesting is the online aspect of the game, which developers say is 'seamlessly integrated' with the single player game, and players can hang out in the fully customisable 'Skate Lounge'. So maybe we're looking at a Test-Drive Unlimited style online mechanism, which would be a great idea if implemented correctly.

Also of note is the reintroduction of video replays, not seen since the earlier days of the franchise, but this time brought back with some added oomph, in the form of the fully-fledged video editor, allowing players to control the camera in the video shoots, and use visual effects to create 'epic skate videos'.

Proving Ground is due out later this year on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2 and DS.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics

Who would have thought that arch rivals Mario and Sonic would ever star in the same video game?

Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles will go all out in the usual Olympic sports; swimming, the 100 meter dash, and table tennis and more.

"We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on this groundbreaking title," said Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation. "For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited."

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

"The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion," said Raymond Goldsmith, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ISM. "Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations."
Now that Mario and Sonic have joined forces, lets hope that Sonic decides to include himself in Super Smash Bros Brawl. Now that would be awesome.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics is due out end of 2007 on Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.

Nintendo GDC 2007

Nintendo didn't provide any surprising news, but did show us new screenshots of they're upcoming games on DS and Wii. They also provided a release list for the next few months, but that is mainly for the US, so Europe may well have to wait a few months to get our hands on them.

Miyamoto also revealed that there will be a new Mii channel launching, in which you will be able to compare your Mii with others, as well as enter contests. Maybe a new selection of options will also be released to further customise your Mii? We'll have to wait and see.

The final revelation from Miyamoto, is that Mario Galaxy will be released by the end of the year. Hurray! Shown at the Nintendo conference was a new trailer for the game, viewable below.

Mario Galaxy (Wii)

Mario Strikers Charged (Wii)

Mario and Co once again take to the pitch in this second entry in the soccer series. Players form an original team by combining one of 12 captains with three of eight sidekicks before competing in one of the game's many modes. Anything goes in Mario Strikers Charged, as players are allowed to use a variety of special abilities to clinch important goals.

Flicking the Wiimote will allow you to slam your opponent into walls, and wen controlling the goalkeeper, pointing at the screen will allow you to defend against Mega Strike shots.

The game will also allow multiplayer over WiFi.

Pokemon Battle Revolution (Wii)

This will be the first Pokemon game to hit the Wii, and will take advantage of WiFi, by becoming the first game to allow multiplayer over the internet. Another first is the ability to link your DS and use it as a controller or import Pokemon from Diamond or Pearl.

Super Paper Mario (Wii)

Fusing 2-D and 3-D perspectives, not to mention RPG and platformer elements, the game slips back and forth between dimensions. The action sprawls across eight worlds filled with traps, puzzles, bizarre mysteries and items that often draw themselves out of thin air.

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)

The game now includes a multiplayer section, in a Pacman style game, in which one person controls Link - trying to collect Force Gems, and the other controls three phantom guards - who are trying to stop him. Players use the DS's touch screen to draw in routes to take. Once Link has been stopped, the roles reverse.

25 Essential Handheld Games

The Final of the Four Part Essentials Series, the Handhelds. Both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP are very different in what they do and who they're aimed at. The DS is for both the people who play games and those that didn't. The PSP more for the mainstream with its media capabilities and alluring design. But right now there is only one leader in the handheld market - none other than the fathers of handhelds - Nintendo. Having said that, the PSP still has some good games, all which will be listed below. Also, seeing as the DS can play GBA games, I will list the Essentials of three formats here.

• Advance Wars Dual Strike (DS)
• Animal Crossing (DS)
• Brain Training (DS)
• Elite Beat Agents (DS)
• Every Extend Extra (PSP)
• Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories (PSP)
Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories (PSP)
• Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past (GBA)
• Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap (GBA)
• LocoRoco (PSP)
• Lumines (PSP)
• Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS)
• Mario Kart (DS)
• Meteos (DS)
• Metroid Prime Hunters (DS)
• New Super Mario Bros (DS)
• Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast (PSP)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)
• Powerstone Collection (PSP)
• Ridge Racer (PSP)
• Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island (GBA)
Trauma Center (DS)
• WarioWare Inc (GBA)
• Wipeout (PSP)
• ZooKeeper (DS)

Top Ten Games of 2006

I did a top ten films one, so it would only be right to do one for games as well. There were so many great games, and it's very hard to choose, but the main highlights of the year for me are (again in alphabetical order.

Animal Crossing (DS)
Very addictive game an excellently suited for the DS. The touch screen makes it easy to control and select items, as that's what you'll be doing for most of the game as you try and amass a fortune and build your house. The inclusion of online play makes it much easier to communicate and trade with fellow Crossers compared to the Gamecube version.

Canis Canem Edit (PS2)
Rockstar show us how to play nice and stick up for the geeks in this kid-style GTA. With NO blood, NO sex, NO drugs, NO knives and NO guns. So next time, the press should actually play the game before slagging it off. It's actually quite a sophisticated game, and if you break the rules, you get punished, much like real school - so maybe kids playing this game will learn something decent.

Guitar Hero (PS2)
I'm not really a rock person, but found this game highly enjoyable, and it has to be the most innovative game of the year for me (bar the Wii games). Although Guitar Hero 2 was also released this year, in my opinion, the former had the better songs. It's a great pick-up and play title, although you'll need to put it down after each song to rest your arms!

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
This has got to be the best launch title ever. The game itself is huge, and I'm talking huge. Ive played it for just under ten hours and have barely scratched the surface of it. And the Wii's controllers make it a perfect combination. From the fishing, to the sword-fighting, it all goes hand in hand. Its a beautifully crafted game, with great visuals and sounds as you would expect from a Zelda title.

Lego Star Wars 2 (360)
I'm not a huge fan of the Star Wars franchise, but having played the first Lego Star Wars game, enjoyed it a great deal, and the same goes for this one. With it's cutesy graphics and simple gameplay mechanism, it's great fun to play - especially in co-op mode.

Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
Amazing artistic style, and graphics. Possibly one of the best PS2 games ever made. The game itself has a simple premise - kill each colossus by finding its weak spot, but every time you're met with a new colossus, each one as big as the last, you can't help but feel a sense of overshadowment, as the sense of scale and size of the enemy is absolutely bewildering each time.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 (360)
Back to basics in this years outing of the Hawk's franchise, and it's certainly done it a load of good. No more silly and pointless side missions, BMXing, or driving cars - just pure skating at its best.

Viva Pinata (360)
You'd expect a developer like Nintendo to release a game about gardening, but here you have Rare, releasing their best game in years. If you play it for a bit, you'll instantly get hooked, seriously. You'll want to build more gardens, in different styles, just to attract a variation of Pinatas. And when you get deep into the game, you'll want to check out online encyclopedias to find out the ways to attract different species and cross-breeding and the like. Splendid game.

We Love Katamari (Ps2)
If you tell someone what this game is about, you'll get a guaranteed laugh, and for those that haven't played it, you'll probably laugh as well. The game sees you (a small alien) rolling around a ball and collecting items - the more items you collect, the bigger your ball gets, in turn allowing you to collect bigger items. I can't believe that nobody thought of such a game earlier! The actual story behind We Love Katamari is pretty far fetched, but enjoy it for what it is and you'll love Katamari as well.

Wii Sports (Wii)
The simplest game you'll ever play. That's what makes this game so amazing. Even if you've never played games, all you need to do is pick up the Wiimote, and you'll get the hang of it in less than a minute. And it comes bundled with 5 games, all of which are multiplayer, so you can whip out your Wiimotes every time someones around and have a boxing duel or tennis tournament. And best of all, it comes bundled free with the machine! Nice one Nintendo!
