Halo 3 Has Gone Gold, Released September 26th
One of the most anticipated releases of the year, Halo 3 has gone gold. The game has now finished development and has been released to manufacturing.

This may not be newsworthy, but it means that the release date is set in stone, and won't be pushed back due to development problems like some recent titles.

Get ready to finish the fight on September 26th, and while your waiting you may want to watch a gameplay trailer from PAX after the jump.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Details

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue By The End of The Year
Sony and Polyphony have announced details of the forthcoming Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The prequel to the full game will be released on both Blu-Ray as well as through the PSN by the end of this year.

It will include forty cars including vehicles by Lotus, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Ferrari for you to race on tracks Eiger Nordwand, the London City Track and Suzuka.

More importantly though, Prologue will be the first Gran Turismo to go online, with support for up to 16 players alongside worldwide leaderboards and a newly announced feature, Gran Turismo TV, which allows you to watch motorsport and manufacturers content. You will also be able to access information on cars and manufacturers through the Online Dealership, all done exclusively through the PSN.

This certainly sounds interesting, and it seems to be that Polyphony are taking Gran Turismo 5 in a whole new direction, and making it the definitive car game.

Preview: Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Beta Impressions
Testing out a game is a tedious yet highly essential part of development, but what better way is there than to utilise the huge user-base of Xbox Live and employ the eager players act as free testers? And we’re not complaining either, as it means we get to play a game months before its release.

Bungie did it with Halo 3 and that was met with huge applause, and now Infinity Ward have done the same with Call of Duty 4, albeit a bit harder to get access to than just buying a copy of Crackdown.

Yet, for those lucky enough, including us, to have played the Call of Duty 4 Beta, we have to say that the game is certainly shaping up to be as good as, if not better than Call of Duty 2.

Everyone knows that you can only base a game on World War II for so long, so Infinity Ward have taken the step to set the game somewhere in the present day, or not too distant future, and is aptly titled “Modern Warfare”.

Hit the jump to read on.

Black Hawk Downed

The Beta starts you off with the usual loading screen and has you selecting what type of multiplayer mode you want to play. There are three modes included from the get-go; Free For All, Team Deathmatch and Team Tactical. As you rank up and Level Six, you will also unlock the mode Team Objective.

The ranking of your player is a nice inclusion into the game and plays a fundamental part of progression in the multiplayer. It not only allows you to show off to your friends in the lobby with a high ranking, but is essential to unlock more weapons, attachments, perks and game modes. The Beta however, has a limit of Level 11, preventing you from unlocking more modes such as Prestige and Clan Tag.

The weapons available to choose vary from the AK47 to the pump-action shotgun, and it’s a nice change to play with compared to the customary WWII Thompson and Trench Gun. In total, the Beta gives you access to an arsenal off twenty weapons, including the usual grenade variations. As mentioned previously, the more you rank up, the more weapons are unlocked. You will also have access to weapon attachments, such as silencers and scopes which can be put on a variety of the firearms.

A useful addition is the ‘Create a Class’ option, unlocked after reaching Level 4, which allows you to group different weapons to suit your tactics or the map you are playing on. The game gives you five custom slots, as well as the bog standard groups seen in Call of Duty 2, for those that want to jump straight into the action without spending time customizing.

You See That? Yes It's 3D Grass

Perks, a feature playing a big role in this game, allows players to upgrade their soldier. Basically, the perks are abilities allowing you to further customize your playing style. The perks come in three categories, each one containing various skills, such as Juggernaut (which increases health) and Dead Silence (which makes your footsteps quieter).

The game also rewards you for how well you play during matches. Modifiers, based on a killing streak, unlock useful items for you to use to your advantage. For example, get a 5-Kill Streak and you get to use an air-strike on a position of your choosing, or get a 7-Kill Streak and call in for helicopter support - all of which are accessible by pressing right on the D-Pad. This brings a whole new aspect of tactical play for when the usual guns do not help.

There are also Challenges, which are as the name suggests, specific objectives to do, and are like in-game achievements. Examples include getting a set number of headshots with a specific weapon. Achieving these objectives also unlocks various attachments and upgrades for you to use.

One feature that Call of Duty 2 did not include was the leaderboard option. Players spent countless hours battling away, and had nothing to show for it. But now in Call of Duty 4, the game incorporates a fully-fledged leaderboard system, allowing you to compare your statistics to that of your friends as well as the world.

Two Soldiers Are Always Better Than One

The Beta lets you play three levels; Overgrown, Crash and Vacant. Each level requires a different approach and are suited to different game types, and it’s only a matter of time before we learn the maps inside out and start favoring some over others. This brings us to a feature most likely taken from Halo 3 - the ‘veto map’ option. This allows you vote against the map selected in the lobby, a total of 3 vetoes are required to change the map.

Graphically the game looks lovely. Bear in mind this is only the multiplayer game, and usually the multiplayer graphics are somewhat diminished compared to those of the single player game, so judging by what we have played the single player game should be a sight to behold. Explosions and gunfire roar around the battlefield, and makes each match very atmospheric. The presentation is gritty and washed out, in a good way, as it makes the whole thing look and feel much more realistic.

The environment is also totally revamped compared to the previous games. A good level to look at is the ‘Overgrown’ map, which shows off the setting, and allows you to use features such as foliage and grass to your advantage. The buildings are also more realistic, for example if you have an enemy camping behind a wall, all you need to do is take a machine gun or something of equal power, and shoot through it, yes you can actually shoot through the walls.

All in all, this game is shaping up to be something special, it takes into account the fast-paced action of Call of Duty 2 and brings with it a new element of gameplay and strategy, which we can use depending on how we want to play.

Keep an eye out for this, as it looks like it might give Halo 3 a run for its money.

Call of Duty 4 Beta Available to UK Players

Call of Duty 4 Beta Confirmed For the UK
You may be one of the many 360 owners who are envious of some of the American Live users granted access to the Call of Duty 4 Beta.

Well envy no more, as Activision have announced that UK players will also be given a chance to test out the game on Monday 27th August.

All you have to do is head over to CharlieOscarDelta, sign up for an account, and at 12pm on 27th August, click on the Enter Now button on the Beta page.

The Beta Tokens are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, so make sure your there on time, and expect the site to be hard to access as the whole 360 community converge for the Tokens.

Update: Apparently this was incorrect and the 27th August Beta Tokens are only available to the US. UK gamers, and all other PAL territories will be able to join the Beta in September, an exact date has yet to be announced.

The demo is just under 1GB in size, and lets you play the first four objectives of Operation Husky.

PlayTV Coming To PS3

Playstation 3 To Receive PVR Functionality in 2008
Sony have announced a new accessory for the PS3, which brings the console closer to the companies hopes of it being an entertainment hub. Aptly named PlayTV, the accessory allows you to watch, record and replay digital television, all in high definition video.

If that wasn't enough, if you have a PSP, you will be able to use the Remote play function of the console to stream your recorded videos on the move.

PlayTV is currently only announced for European territories, and will be available sometime next year.

PlayTV Unlocks Free Digital TV On PlayStation 3

Watch, record and replay TV shows on demand

Turn PS3 into a digital personal video recorder and record programmes to watch anytime, anywhere

Leipzig, 22 August 2007. At Games Convention today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced the introduction of PlayTV, a combined TV tuner and Personal Video Recorder (PVR) for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™). PlayTV will be available in UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain early in 2008, with other PAL territories to follow in due course.

Designed to reinforce PS3's rightful place in the Living Room at the heart of the home entertainment needs, the twin channel TV tuner peripheral and PVR software turns PS3 into a state of the art TV recorder, allowing users to watch, pause and record live TV. PlayTV will also record individual programmes or whole series1 to the PS3 hard drive for viewing later on the family TV, or for transferring to the PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) for remote viewing outside of the home.

Operating on the widely available Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial (DVB-T) format, PlayTV uses an incredibly quick and easy to use 7-day Electronic Programme Guide EPG2. that provides the navigation for programming the PVR features of PlayTV.

In line with PlayStation's focus on advanced technology made easy, PlayTV provides a host of added value features seldom seen on anything but the highest cost standalone PVRs:

· PlayTV's two TV tuners are High Definition ready and are able to view, record and play back High Definition signals in full HD1080P to fully complement PS3's already impressive High Definition credentials.

· Unlike the electronic programme guides found on conventional satellite and cable services, PlayTV's EPG is lightning fast, and simple to use with either PS3's SIXAXIS™ wireless controller or the BD remote control to really enhance viewing pleasure.

· Intuitive controls, single button help features, tutorial videos and simple navigation make PlayTV a positive joy to use compared with the complexity of some standalone PVR models

· Seamless connectivity with PSP allows you to set recordings, watch Live TV and recorded TV programmes remotely on PSP via a Wi-Fi connection (using Remote Play feature). Alternatively, quickly transcode recorded TV shows for high quality viewing to PSP by USB cable for remote viewing away from the home.

· Optional on-screen graphical display provides a wealth of information about the status of PlayTV and provides quick access to programme information, stored TV programmes and the controls to pause or record live TV. PlayTV will also set the correct interface for either Standard Definition or High Definition displays, maximising the viewing experience.

· PlayTV will evolve with time, with great added value functionality being updated via PLAYSTATION®Network; a feature that sets it above all other set top boxes. PlayTV will never be out of date.

"The introduction of PlayTV really will extend the already broad entertainment credentials of PS3, and makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition for the whole family," said David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "PS3 already provides High Definition gaming, Blu-ray Disc movies, music, video, photo album, web browsing and PLAYSTATION Network support. With the introduction of PlayTV's state of the art TV tuner and PVR functionality, PS3 is now the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family.

Broken Big Daddy Figure?

2KGames to Replace Broken Big Daddy Figures and Give Free Art Book On Top
With Bioshock being released this week, many of you might opt for the Limited Edition Big Daddy version, which comes complete with a steel case, two discs of bonus content (soundtrack and 'Making Of'), and most importantly, a Big Daddy figure.

However, don't get all excited about it once you get home though, as 2KGames has said that some figures may have been damaged on the way to retailers.

To reimburse your sadness if you are met with a broken Big Daddy, 2KGames are being extremely generous by giving the unlucky few a replacement Big Daddy as well as a printed Limited Edition Art Book.

Somehow I think that the "small percentage" they are quoting will turn into a majority.

If you have an unbroken Big Daddy and still want a art book, then you can download one here.

Let's hope 2KGames start selling those art books as this game is one of the few that really does need one.

Hit the jump to read 2KGames press release.
2K Games has identified a small percentage of Big Daddy figurines that have been damaged in transit to US and Canadian retailers. We are in the process of setting up a replacement program to ensure customers who are affected by the damaged figurines are issued replacement figurines as quickly as possible.

Since redemption will not be immediate as replacement figurines are currently beginning production, we will be also sending affected customers a complimentary special printed edition of the BioShock art book, "Breaking the Mold," to enjoy while the replacement figurines are produced and shipped. Additionally, 2K Games will cover all shipping costs for the figurines and art book.

Please check back at this page shortly for details on how to obtain a replacement figurine. We apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced.

Paramount and DreamWorks Side With HD-DVD

Paramount and DreamWorks Drop Sony's Blu-Ray Format, Opt For HD-DVD Instead
Both Paramount and DreamWorks announced today that they will be releasing movies exclusively for the HD-DVD format, which will come as a shock to Blu-Ray supporters as Paramount had been releasing movies on both formats.

Paramount have said that their choice was based on the pricing of HD-DVD, and the format being more suitable for families, but somehow I think that something else may have pulled them to the HD-DVD side.

Paramount will be releasing its first exclusive at the end of August, Blades of Glory, with other hit titles such as Transformers, Shrek the Third due later this autumn.

Don't worry though, the high-def war is far from over as the Blu-Ray format is still being supported by Sony, MGM, Fox, Disney and Universal.

Jump to read the full press release.
Los Angeles, CA, August 20, 2007 – Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B) and DreamWorks Animation SKG (NYSEWA), each announced today that they will exclusively support the next-generation HD DVD format on a worldwide basis. The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

The companies each said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs. Paramount Home Entertainment will launch its exclusive HD DVD program with the release of the blockbuster comedy hit “Blades of Glory” on August 28th and follow with two of the biggest grossing movies of the year “Transformers” and “Shrek the Third”. These three titles alone represent more than $1.5 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide.

“The combination of Paramount and DreamWorks Animation brings a critical mass of current box office hits to consumers with a line-up of live action and animated films that are perfect for HD DVD,” stated Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, which is currently the leading studio in domestic box office. “Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience. I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount.”

“We decided to release “Shrek the Third” and other DreamWorks Animation titles exclusively on HD DVD because we believe it is the best format to bring high quality home entertainment to a key segment of our audience – families,” stated DreamWorks Animation CEO, Jeffrey Katzenberg. “We believe the combination of this year’s low- priced HD DVD players and the commitment to release a significant number of hit titles in the fall makes HD DVD the best way to view movies at home.”

With the rapid increase of HD TV screens in households, and audiences wanting to enjoy the total entertainment experience, HD DVD has emerged as the most affordable way for consumers to watch their movies in high definition. In addition to pristine quality, HD DVD also offers consumers the chance to personalize the movie-watching experience, to interact with their movies and even to connect with a community of other fans.

Paramount Home Entertainment will issue new releases day and date as well as catalog titles exclusively on HD DVD. Today’s announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format.

Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe with more than 5.5 games sold per console since launch (PS2: 3.8; GC: 5.2; Xbox: 4.3 after 17 months on the market*).
